Searching on three levels

In WorldCat you search on three levels: on a local level (Utrecht University Library), and on a national and worldwide level. By default the search is on all available items worldwide.

However, you can limit your search to Libraries in the Netherlands or only Utrecht University Library.

Within Utrecht University Library you can filter on Locations.

Searching for CDs and DVDs

When you are searching for CDs and DVDs use the filters to the left of your list of results. Under "Format" click on "Show more".

Introduction

In WorldCat you will find the collection of Utrecht University Library, together with material from thousands of other libraries and publishers worldwide.

You can search on three levels: on a local level (Utrecht), national level (libraries in the Netherlands) or on a global level. Always use WorldCat by Utrecht University to get immediate access to the full texts. The right url is: https://utrechtuniversity.on.worldcat.org

Included in your search is a limited number of databases. You will find an overview under "Advanced Search" on the right-hand side of the page.

Please note: This means that in WorldCat you do not search all library-licensed search engines. The complete list of search engines can be found on the library website.

Please note: A quicker way to find digital journals is by consulting the separate list of electronic journals in WorldCat.

Using filters

After having done a search, you can use filters to limit the number of search results. You will find the filters to the left of your list of search results.

Please note WorldCat has many filters but:

  • The filters are not arranged in alphabetical order but according to the number of search results.
    • It may be that you are looking for a CD and find it all the way down the list, because not many CDs occur in the search results.
  • You may, without wanting to, exclude relevant results by using filters. So be careful in using too many or too specific filters.

It is possible to retain filters for a new search.

If you want to search in specific indexes, please read the information on Advanced search.

Advanced search

In Advanced Search you search in specific indexes.

Before you enter search terms you can use the filters under '"Search Tools", for instance by filtering on the year of publication.

Please note Deal carefully with the many (limiting) options in "Advanced Search", because you may exclude relevant items unintentionally.

Access to material

Search by author

If you are looking for all publications by one author in WorldCat, select "Author" in the Search index.

Tips when searching by author's name:

  • Only search by the last name of the author. Avoid adding initial letters or first names to a last name, because this may lead to search results not being found.
  • In the case of too many results, use the Author/Creator filter left to the search results.
  • In the "author" search field, you can also enter an organisation or institution as author in the field "Search Term" for instance World Health Organization.

Searching by ISBN/ISSN

The quickest way to find a publication is by searching on ISBN (in case of a book) or ISSN (in case of a journal).

Please note Books can have more than one ISBN (print books and e-books)
