About this LibGuide

This LibGuide supports BA students Media and culture, enrolled in the course Intermediality, in systematically searching for and selecting relevant academic literature about a given topic, in the case of this particular course, on the topic ‘intermediality’.

    on finding (library) resources to help you explore and refine your topic.
  • Search Literature:
    on actually searching for books and articles relevant to your topic, using relevant keywords and a sound strategy.
  • Process Literature:
    on managing and evaluating the literature you have found.

Before you start

During the workshop you will need a notebook with the program Zotero installed, follow these instructions. If you don't have a notebook, install Zotero on your pc and make sure that you can work together with a fellow student who does have a notebook available at the workshop.

Learning goals

  • students gets introduced to different online databases our university library gives access to and is aware of the differences between them
  • students learn how to systematically search for literature on an academic topic, using different methods
  • students learn how to assess the academic quality of publications found on a basic level
  • students learn how to work with the software tool Zotero to organize search results
  • students become aware of searching literature as an ongoing process during which one builds on and works with previous hits

Assignments and assessment

Through a series of in-class assignments,  incorporated and described in this LibGuide, students train diverse aspects of searching for academic literature in small groups. In their own pace groups work through 6 modules.The assignments in each module build towards a final assignment which is outlined in more detail below.

Final assignment

Create a list of publications in Zotero on the topic your group has chosen and is relevant in the context of intermediality in media and culture.

Guidelines

  • The list consists of 20 relevant titles
  • It comprises a combination of books and articles (with a minimum of 5 books)
  • As a rule: only publications from 2007 and newer, unless you have good reasons to include an older publication
  • Between 3-5 relevant keywords are added to each title, using the 'tags' option
  • A 'note' is added to each entry. This note contains:
    1. Relevant author information that indicates disciplinary background and/or current position (max. 25 words)
    2. A few lines about why the source is relevant (max. 50 words)
    3. A list of search terms used
    4. An indication (yes/no) if there is a book review available and if so a link to where it can be found
    5. Mention of the number of citations
    6. In case of a journal article: indication (yes/no) if the journal is peer-reviewed 

Criteria of assessment

  • Adherence to guidelines
  • Quality of selection of publications (relevant to topic)
  • Quality of notes and tags

You can start your research anywhere and anytime. Both the resources for searching literature and the literature itself are often available online. Yet the library as a physical space remains important.

  • Use our printed resources (for instance on Communication and Information Sciences and Theatre, Film and Television Studies).
  • Do you need help? We have Information Specialists standby during office hours (Monday through Friday from 9 A.M. to 5 P.M) to assist you personally. Just ask for them at the Service Desk.
  • Use our study facilities (Wi-Fi, computers, laptops for rent, study spaces for groups).
